TMA Mondays: Here's a Tip...

TMA'ed while listening to Life Goes down by Ang Low

Or maybe not? Everyone is talking about tipping in the restaurant biz. I'm not sure what exactly is elevating the conversation now, maybe its because a lot of states have raised/are fighting to raise the minimum wage or maybe it's because restaurant owners are finally taking note of the disparity that can exist between the front of house and the back of house. Folks like Josh Henderson and the Huxley Wallace Collective are jumping on the bandwagon. He removed tipping at his new restaurants Saint Helen's and Bar Noroeste with plans to get rid of  tipping in all his restaurants. Tom-D had switched to a 20% service charge in 3 of his restaurants already. With all these discussions happening, the California 9th Circuit Court of Appeals'  ruling to uphold the rule that bans restaurants from forcing  tip-pooling, definitely adds some fuel to the fire. Hate it or love it, a change is coming.

In other news, can Shama Joshi be my spirit animal? She quit her job at Microsoft to pursue her foodie dreams alongside her old college friend Seema Pai. Their food truck Roll OK Please, serves Kathi rolls. Check out their Facebook page to know where to find them.

Restaurant

Café Turko, Fremont - Café Turko was one of the first restaurants we reviewed on TMA. I still love it. Check them out in their new and larger space. It’s a temporary move, but their bigger space means more seating which means less waiting and more eating.

Ingredient

White Chocolate - I first stumbled across humming bird high when I found her recipe for chocolate malt cake. She uses white chocolate Maltesers ( my favourite chocolate in the world) to create a delicious and simple looking malt cake. If you are having frosting cravings, try this recipe. New Sh*t in Town

No Bones Beach Club, Ballard - No Bones About It have expanded from their food truck to an actual space. No bones beach club claims to be the first plant based Tiki-bar in the world. The menu includes vegan twists like cauliflower wings and tempeh kabobs.

Meekong Bar, Belltown - There is a new kid in town and its Meekong Bar. They are in Twisted Pasty's former spot on 4th Ave and they'll be serving Vietnamese fusion cuisine. Go try out their Bahn Mi burgers and tell me how they were.

Un Bien, Ballard - This sandwich shop, owned by the sons of the former owner of Paseo is expanding. Guess where? To Paseo's old location in Ballard! Check them out if you miss that original Paseo recipe.

Bacon, Eggs and Kegs, 03/ 13 - If I tell you I stumbled upon this event by typing the wrong URL in my browser would you believe me? Well I did and because of this, I can tell you all about this exciting brunch extravaganza happening soon.
