Mercury Coffee Co. Roastery
There are a lot of similarities to the Starbucks experience, but they are also as different as night and day.
They have signature drinks, state of the art roaster visible to all, and an in house bakery onsite, but the similarities end there. Other than just coffee, Mercury also has fresh pressed juices and kombucha.
Unlike the vibe at the Starbucks Roastery, the space is bright and airy with tall windows and a mirrored back wall that makes it feel even more spacious. It feels bright even on the gloomiest of Seattle days. To add a historical touch, they also have the neon sign from the original Mercury coffee shop in Woodinville.
So how was the coffee?
I'm not the best person to ask, so I took two of my friends who are more in the know.
We got two signature drinks and one 8Oz latte.
The Bees Knees - Honey, Cinnamon & a Dash of Brown Sugar
Friend's opinion: The cinnamon is strong in this one, but as you swallow you taste the honey contrast the coffee taste.
Blonde Hawaiian - White Chocolate, Macadamia Nut & Real Coconut
It's Hawaii in a cup, i.e. sunshine. The flavor is bright, sweet and nutty. The milky coffee is topped with coconut flakes and it's just the kind of coffee a non-coffee drinker like me would love.
8Oz- Organic Espresso & Velvety Milk
Friend's opinion: The coffee is similar to Starbucks and Seattle coffee works, but nothing like her favorite, Anchorhead. The foaming of the latte isn't done right and they only have one shot of espresso by default. Also don't expect latte art.
The food selection was substantial.
We ordered two savory items and two baked goods:
Beecher veggie quiche
It was the perfect savory dish to go with my sweet milky coffee. It also came with a side of salad.
Black bottom cupcake
Cupcake on the bottom and cheesecake on top, who thought of this? I didn’t know this was a thing until I saw it on their menu. I really liked the cupcake bottom, it was rich on its own, but the chocolate chip cream cheese topping was too much for me to handle or digest in one sitting.
Chocolate almond croissant
Really messy and hard to share but worth it. It was the perfect amount of chocolate and marzipan ratio. The croissant was doughy on the inside and flaky on the outside.
Jalepeno cream cheese croissant
This sounded promising, but I realized I don’t like cream cheese as a spread on any bread except bagels.
TLDR: If you have a sweet tooth, Mercury Coffee drinks are meant for you.
