Much like the cherry blossoms at UW campus, the Seattle food scene is starting to bloom with new restaurants, pop-ups and foodie events.
This week has three pop-ups that hold the promise of brightening the day amidst the forecast of April showers.
Aloha Y'all is having a series of pop-ups in 2017, including one on Saturday, where they combine comfort food from three culture. They'll also donate all proceeds to a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting for human rights and planet earth.
The Vegan Cambodian food pop-up at Taproot Café is to celebrate Khmer New year's. This Saturday 4/8 is the first of two pop-ups. No reservations are necessary, just show up for dinner from 5-8pm.
Chef Tekulve is knowing for working at restaurants like Canlis and Lark. Now he is planning to open his own restaurant called Surrell in 2018. Since that is so far away he is hosting a six course pop-up dinner at Premier on Pine this Friday 4/7.
As they say, April showers bring May new foodie adventures.
Our Pick of the Week
Salt & Straw - Dare I say this is better than Molly Moons? Well it is. Their flavors are more up my alley. We tried them this past weekend while visiting Portland because we can't wait until mid-summer when they open in Seattle.
Zucchini - I don't have many vegetables I proclaim to love. Zucchini is one of the exceptions. I recently saw a recipe on the healthyfoodvideos instagram for Zucchini Parmesan that not only piqued my interest but had me drooling.
New Sh*t in Town
Bellden, Bellevue - Bellden may look like any old coffee shop , but they have a huge community aspect in their café. They support local charities in 3 ways. One, requiring staff to volunteer at a nonprofit as a team. Two, inviting organizations to visit and promote their work. Three, offering menu items for each featured charity and donating the proceeds for those items directly to the organizations.
Lady Yum, Sea-Tac airport - Lady Yum is taking a page out of Laduree's book and setting up shop in the airport. If you are travelling and passing through C concourse expect to see their kiosk as it just opened last Thursday.
Minamoto, Bellevue - A new high-end Japanese restaurant will be opening in downtown Bellevue any day now. Think sushi and omakase (chef's choice) dining.
Pressed Juicery, Capitol Hill - This chain has expanded into Capitol hill as its 60th location. While they are known for their cold pressed juices, they also have a "Freeze" line that serves frozen yogurt.
Navy Strength, Belltown - If you want summer vibes early, check out this new take on a tiki bar that has a menu of tropical drinks and a 1950s themed backyard barbecue.
Seattle, What's Happening?
Brunch Run, 4/8 - With the summer approaching, we are all trying to motivate ourselves to get those swim suit bods ready. Start with Seattle Magazines Brunch 5k where you run/walk to a finish line that has more than 15 local restaurants serving up brunch bites. Registration ends Wednesday, so click the link and get on it!
Plate of Nations, 3/24- 4/9 - This annual event of multicultural dining is back and its a perfect way to balance your Seattle Restaurant week outings with more under the radar restaurants that have shareable menus between $15-25.
