TMA Mondays: No Reservations
TMA'ed with Straight Up & Down by Bruno Mars on repeat
There isn't much happening in Seattle this week. Maybe everyone is still recovering from Thanksgiving?
Mama's Mexican Kitchen (now Mama's Cantina) is up for consideration as a cultural landmark by Seattle's Landmark Preservation Board. The board will be considering Mama's at a meeting on Dec 7th at 3:30pm. The meeting is open to the public.
Unfortunately, Tini Bigs another neighborhood landmark will officially be closing its doors at the end of this year. Its sibling tiki bar Hula Hula will also be closing. Tini Bigs has been in the neighborhood for 20 years, and its owner Keith Robbins plans to go out with a bang with a 20th anniversary party on December 7th. It'll be half-off food, wine and spirits starting at 4pm.
Lastly, there is a new player in the Seattle restaurant review business. Renzell differentiates itself from the likes of the Michelin Guide, Yelp and Zagat with its data-driven reviews. Reviews are written by Renzell members who go to restaurants on their own dime and afterwards complete a comprehensive survey of 70-plus questions. The collective results are then weighted against member preferences and using their proprietary algorithm, they produce ratings.
Our Pick of the Week
Sushi Kashiba, Pike Place Market - Sushi Kashiba is Chef Shiro Kashiba's new spot in Pike Place market. I went there this past weekend and got the Omakase and Lord have mercy it was so good!! The service is superb, the sushi is fresh and by the end of all the courses, we were stuffed! If you haven't been there, you need to visit ASAP. Reservations are highly recommended and if you want to sit at the sushi bar, you may have to go earlier on in the day and put your name on the bar list (the bar doesn’t take reservations). Maybe you'll be lucky and Shiro himself will be serving you sushi.
Gingersnap Cookies - As soon as thanksgiving ends, Christmas season begins. You start playing Christmas songs and getting invited to holiday parties. Unsure what to bring to these soirees? Why not try this recipe for soft Gingersnap Cookies by Two Peas and their Pod.
New Sh*t In Town
L'Oursin, Central District - L'Oursin just opened last week, right next to Seven Beef. It’s a French restaurant and according to their website they are focused on "sustainable seafood, natural wine and aperitif cocktails." Their menu is currently mostly small plates like foie gras with sea urchin mousse (fancy!) but they do have larger plateslike roasted chicken with golden chanterelles. Go check them out!
Katsu Burger, Capitol Hill - Katsu Burger is expanding to Cap Hill! They will be settling into the space formerly held by The Old Sage. The plan is to open just before Christmas, just in time for you to get a giant burger and some nori fries.
Seattle, What's Happening?
Winter Beer Fest, 12/ 02 - 12/03 - Seattle is constantly having some beer festival or the other. This weekend is the Winter Beer festival. Think, "malty stouts, winter warmers and other unique beers". It will be two days featuring over 50 local breweries. Go get warm.
CookieFest, 12/10 - You buy cookies and they benefit the Seattle Milk Fund for children's education. It's that simple.
